Thanks to Mark Supernaw at the Main Street Bar & Grill in Farragut for sponsoring the poker run for the Farragut Admiral Trail. Also to Sarah Hall who worked hard to put everything together. This would not have been possible without the 21 riders who rode in the extreme heat on Saturday, in support of the Admiral Trail. The route started in Farragut then went to Imogene, Emerson, Malvern, Riverton and then finished back at the start. Once everyone was back cards were drawn for the best poker hand. The top three winners were Russ Swank, Liz Tedder/Fred Miller, and Shari Pitman. All three graciously gave their winnings back to the trail. Afterwards everyone enjoyed pizza and refreshments to finish off the day . We raised $420.00, so thanks again to everyone who came out in support of the trail.

It was a hot evening on the 16th of June when members of both the Farragut Admiral Trail and Farragut Hometown Pride Committee worked together to install 5 new mile markers and 7 birdhouses along the completed portion of the trail. The birdhouses were constructed, and painted by members of the community through a program created by the Farragut Hometown Pride Committee. Some of those who worked on the houses chose to take them home but others donated them to be installed along the trail. Steel posts were purchased through a grant generated by the Farragut Hometown Pride members. We would like to thank JF McQueen for the use of his UTV and help measuring out the mile marker locations. To Mike Hodges for his help and use of his skid steer to dig the holes. To the Wabash Trace for donating the steel posts for the mile markers. And to special guest volunteer Aaron McCormick for his help putting up the markers and birdhouses. With the help of a grant from the Iowa Grocery Industry Association and the Build with Bags Program the Admiral Trail was able to install 5 new benches made from recycled plastic bags. This included a letter of support from Aaron O'Brien, Grocery Manger from the Shenandoah Fareway, which made it all possible. A small but hard working group of volunteers from both the Admiral Trail Committee and the Farragut Hometown Pride Committee were able to install the benches in a couple of days. You can find the benches at Jackson Street, 1/4 mile west of the Manti Road, 2 benches are at Bridge 1, and the last one is at 390th Ave. Almost immediately after moving equipment in on Dec. 7, 2020 Reilly Construction began work on the Farragut Admiral Trail. But shortly after the cold weather and snow halted construction. With the good spring weather progress has been going well. A lot of the grading on the trail has been done, 25% of the granular material (500 ton) is on site and 10% of that has been applied to the trail. Once all granular is in place shoulder grading will be done. With good weather all material should be in place in 3 - 4 weeks. At this time Boulder Construction has placed 3 concrete culverts where bridge 2 was destroyed by fire. They are repairing the piers on Bridge 1. As soon as repairs are complete they will be laying concrete over the bridge and culverts. The timeline for this will possibly be 2 - 3 weeks after most of the material has been applied to the trail. This trail project has been possible through grants from the Greater Shenandoah Foundation, SWIPCO TAP (Transportation Alternative Program), Federal Recreation Fund, State Recreation Fund, Doppelt Fund, and the Reap Fund. Also from generous donations from Farragut Alumni and the local public. We still have a long to go though, and we look forward to continuing to partner with the community. Photos provided by Shawn Holman Phase 1, The Farragut Admiral Trail will go from New Orleans Street to 390th Ave. Phase 1 will consist of having a granular sub-base with repairs to the structures. We will also be looking to paving the trail in the future. Phase 2, The Admiral Trail will go from 390th Ave to Highway 2, and will eventually connect to the Wabash Nature Trail in Shenandoah.
